In 2003, Jolie was first honored with the Citizen of the World Award – Sergio Vieira de Mello, the United Nations Correspondents Association, and in 2005 received the Global Humanitarian Award by the United Nations Association of the United States and the Business Council for the Nations for her work with the refugees. In her speech of thanks, Jolie said, “After my first trip to a refugee camp, I made a promise that I would try to help others to understand everything that I was fortunate enough to witness. So I stand here today makes me feel that in some way I am living up to that promise.”.

In 2007, the International Rescue Committee granted Jolie and High Commissioner Guterres Freedom Award for their contributions to the cause of refugees and human freedom. In October 2011, UNHCR paid tribute to Jolie for her 10 years of service as a Goodwill Ambassador of the agency.
